167 food ingredient suppliers affected by toxic contamination: DOH

A total of 167 food ingredient suppliers face recalls due to the snowballing toxic contamination scandal, the Department of Health (DOH) said Thursday (May 26).

So far, the cancer-causing plasticizer DEHP had been detected in an emulsifying additive called cloudy agent which has been detected in the products of 47 local manufacturers of food and drinks that unknowingly used the tainted ingredient, all of which have to be recalled, according to Hsu Ming-neng, deputy director-general of the DOH's Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Hsu urged other manufacturers to send their products for tests to prove that they are free of the harmful chemical.

Taiwan is gripped in a food scare after the DOH confirmed on Monday that DEHP had been found in cloudy agent, which is commonly used in fruit jelly, yogurt mix powder, juices and other drinks to keep emulsions well dispersed.

Investigations revealed that the tainted cloudy agent products were either produced by the Yu Sheng Chemical Co, or intermediaries supplied by the company.

Some of the tainted ingredients and products were believed to have been exported overseas.

Hsu said the FDA should be able to track most of the contaminated items within the next couple of days, when the DOH will again write to the International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN) under the World Health Organization.

Hsu said he had already informed INFOSAN officials of the incident while attending the World Health Assembly in Geneva earlier this week. The DOH later also wrote to INFOSAN via e-mail to provide further information, but the group has not yet responded, he said.

Meanwhile, Taiwan Sugar Co announced Thursday that it is recalling its "Turmeric Oyster Shell" supplement tablets due to DEHP contamination.

The company also said it was sending four other products for tests to determine if they are tainted.

Another victim, HeySong Corp, said it has asked all its distributors to recall its "FruitHouse" probiotic powder and three other brands of dietary supplements that might have been contaminated.

Consumers who have bought the products will get refunds unconditionally, the company said.

Meanwhile, food ingredient exporter Possmei Corp. said it has notified its clients in more than 20 countries to stop selling its concentrated juice products to await test results.

According to Possmei President Yang Hsi-shun, the company will further inform its clients if the products are safe as soon as the results are available.

Passion fruit juice, mango juice and lychee juice produced by Possmei were on the DEHP contamination-related recall list announced by the New Taipei City Health Bureau on Wednesday.

The company also supplies bubble milk tea ingredients. Among its most well-known overseas clients is the recently opened Bubbleology tea house in London, which reports its products are free of any contamination.

Giant Union Co., a supplier of oriental foods and commodities in Los Angeles, said Wednesday that it has stopped importing "popping boba," a translucent gummy ball from Possmei that contains flavored juices and can be added to drinks.

A beef extract that can make any kind of meat taste and look just like beef has been observed being used in markets in Anhui province, China, adding to concerns about the nation's food safety, according to the Anhui Daily Press Group on Thursday.

Press reports said that by adding a few teaspoons of beef extract before heating a piece of pork, it can easily be transformed into beef.

The owner of a seasoning store said that her store had two types of beef extract. "A 500 gram bottle of beef extract can turn 50 kilograms of pork into beef," she said.

Since a kilogram of beef costs more than a kilogram of pork at the Hefei market in Anhui province, by converting 50 kilograms of pork into "fake" beef, sellers can earn a handsome profit of 450 yuan (US$68.88), or even save as much as 1,000 yuan (US$153.07) by selling the same quantity to delicatessens.

However, a nephrologist in the province warned that consuming the extract would lower the ability of hemoglobin, a red protein in blood, to transport oxygen, and might lead to chronic poisoning, deformity, or cancer if consumed for a long period of time. He said consumers should avoid very brightly-colored deli meat.

Alcala moves to craft halal food standards

MANILA, Philippines – Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala has called for the quick crafting of the country’s halal food standards to enable exporters to secure a good share of the $2.3-trillion global halal market.

He ordered Halal Food Industry Development Committee (HFIDC) chairman Sani D. Macabalang, also director of Region 12 of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), to consult with stakeholders nationwide in order to refine the proposed draft standards.

The standards also cover food products derived from genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) or bred using biotechnological processes.

Alcala said by penetrating this lucrative market, Philippine food exports will be increased and thus revitalize agri-fishery agribusiness enterprises concentrating on the market.

It would also lead to the establishment of more world-class halal food production and processing enterprises and provide employment opportunities to thousands of Filipinos, Alcala said.

The first consultation was held last Jan. 24 at the Bureau of Plant Industry satellite office in Quezon City, where the HFIDC presented to halal industry stakeholders three draft standards, namely “Halal Agriculture and Fishery Products,” “Code of Halal Slaughtering Practices for Poultry” and the “Code of Halal Slaughtering Practices for Large Ruminants.”

It was attended by about 50 Muslim scholars from Metro Manila and suburbs, and officials and representatives from the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF), partner agencies, and the private sector.

Three other consultations will be conducted in General Santos on Feb. 16 while those in Zamboanga City and Cebu City have been scheduled next month.

Macabalang said the three proposed standards include specific provisions for each food product group and address issues on GMOs.

“The standards took into account the requirements set by regional and international bodies to ensure harmonization of the various provisions which are important in the recognition of the country’s halal exports,” Macabalang said.

When finalized, the three Philippine halal code of standards will be presented to the ASEAN Technical Working Group on Halal Food and the World Halal Forum to be held in Malaysia in April.

Macabalang said once the Philippine halal standards are approved and recognized by these bodies, the country could then easily gain access to the world halal market.

NCMF is tasked to accredit halal-certifying entities in partnership with the DA and other government agencies, the private sector, and institutions, as stipulated in Art 2(h) of RA 9997 s. 2009.

at hypermarket in Bangi. While searching the list of goods
written, and I found the bottle of among carbonated water shelve

and 0.0% alcohol and made from malt and barley.

Made in Germany with the Arabic word. The Issue is whether we can drink it?
Several years ago a company producing Malt beverages in Malaysia and Fatwa
prohibited to drink due on the manufactured done on the same premises
Liquor making. Some people in our society believe this is normal . It easy to find this claimed "Halal beer" at
middle east restaurant. The characteristic similar to the original beer .Certain people in our society had a wrong perception because if it written no-alcoholic or 0% alcohol contain and written in Arabic word it's okay.
. My question is are the same company produce
wine and using technology that can
reduce or eliminate alcohol content?. It has a Law in
Western countries the manufacturer does not require to state the
alcohol content if the value very low so they also can claim alcohol free beer.

Clearly the al-Quran "wine" is not allowed is even small amount.Wine or beer is
alcohol and not all alcohol is Wine or Beer!. I had a friend
told me stories regarding one his friend that has long ceased to drink
beer, but has returned to old habits after drinking "Halal beer due on it's
taste and smell are as same as original beer.

That is why the Islamic authorities like JAKIM never do process
halal certification for such products? or products synonymous
with food and beverages are synonym with non-halal, such as Bak Kut The (
Herb Pig bone ribs Soups), Bacon, Ham, Hot Dog, Char Siew Sauce (marinate sauce for meat is usually pork), etc.. This is due to
prevent Muslim especially young people get confused and we don't want our children

The eating of pork is prohibited in Islam for numerous reasons, a growing number of which are becoming very obvious as scientific research progresses. The eating of pork is injurious to health. The swine flesh is infested with germs, parasites and bacteria which can be transfered to man when consumed. My post this time to relate what actually is the alcohol? So that we can understand these things better.

Many felt that alcohol is liqueur, but not all alcohol is liqueur.

I will do clarify of alcohol in aspects of science and technology.

Based on the history of wine began as a drink made at 8,000-10,000 years ago (the discovery of accidental fermentation of grains / cereals).

5,000 years ago began planting grapes carried on a large - scale as raw material to produce alcohol.

In the 16th century - the 'chemist' find alcohol as a result of "distillation".

In the mid-18th century - alcohol known as new materials in many intoxicating beverages.

According to rules 361 (1) in Food Regulations 1985 define the likuour Alcoholic beverage containing more than 2% alcohol.

Two types of alcohol is the best:

1. Methyl alcohol (Methanol) or wood alcohol

2.) Ethyl alcohol (Ethanol) or grain alcohol

Methyl alcohol (Methanol) is not used as drinking poison because it is harmful.

While Ethyl Alcohol (Ethanol) is usually used as a mixture in the liquor.

Generally, alcohol is dangerous and poisonous.

It is intoxicating and killing power and damaged body.

Alcohol has many uses including:

1. As liquor / Alcohol / wine-impurity

2. As solvents in Food Materials

Alcohol added to food as preservatives, colors and improve taste pull flavor (alcohol mixture is too little)
For example in the chocolate cake, Mirin, salad dressing and sauce food (italian and japanese)

3. As the solvent (Solvent)

To "extract flavouring chemical" in plants
Cosmetics and medicines
4. As raw materials

To make vinegar
Alcohol is a solvent material which is very good as it can dissolve the oil, compared with water or other materials.

In perfume, alcohol used for the purpose of solvent and as materials that can ensure that the fragrant lasts much longer.

What is emulsion actually?

Two (2) type of emulsion :

Other example of emulsifier are soy lecithin (E322) and Mono- and di – glycerides (E 471)
The issue is if the emulsifier from animal origin we have to make sure animal source is halal. So muslim consumer must be alert if emulsifier used in food product.

Definition of Halal in accordance to Trade Descriptions ( Use of expression "halal" ) 1975 is as follows:

When used in relation to food in any form whatsoever in the course of trade or business as or as part of, a trade description applied to the ffod, the expression "Halal" , "Di-Tanggung Halal" or "Makanan Halal" or any other expression indicating or likely to be understood as indicating that Muslims are permitted by their religion to consume such food such expression shal heve the following meaning, that is to say the food in relation to which such expression or expressions are used:

a) Neither is nor consist of or contains any part or matter of an animal that a Muslim is prohibited by Hukum Syarak to consume or that has not been slaughtered in accordance with Hukum Syarak.

b) Does not contain anything which is considered to be impure according to Hukum Syarak.

c) Has not been prepared, processed or manufactured using instrument that was not free from anything impure according to Hukum Syarak; and

d) has not in the course of preparation, processing or storage been in contact with or close proximity to any food that fails to satisfy paragraph (a) (b) or (c) or anything that is considered to be impure according to Hukum Syarak.
